self-care tips

Self-care is vital whatever your position or time in life. Everyone has challenges to deal with and responsibilities, whether they be personal or professional. Our self-care tips can help you deal with these daily challenges.

What is self-care exactly?

Self-care is something you hear about a lot. You might see it in self-help books, magazine articles or on the TV. However, it is not often that you actually see it explained so that you can understand how it can add to your life. You are probably not convinced that self-care should be part of your routines. So then, why is it so important, and what would suit you as an individual. Self-care is a wide term covering lots of good things that you can do for yourself. It is being kind to yourself and appreciating that when you are running on low, you need to replenish yourself. This involves self-compassion so that you don’t allow yourself to burn-out.

In saying that, you must realise that our self-care tips do not include everything that might feel good. Alcohol, binge eating, risky behaviour – these might feel good for a short while but of course in reality they can be self-destructive. All they do is provide a short lasting temporary relief. Emotions change but it does not last. Self-care should be about long-term benefits for your body and mind.

Self-care tips – The benefits

1. Increased productivity – Saying yes to the things that benefit you – saying yes to improving your life.
2. Better disease resistance because you are looking after your body, boosting your immune system – being rewarded with better health.
3. Boosted self-esteem, because you are being good to your body and soul, your mind receiving positive messages. You matter to you so you avoid negativity and learn to ignore the little critical voice that sometimes appears in your mind.
4. Improved self-knowledge because you naturally take in more when you are doing or reading about things you love – you know what excites your passions and are doing it or are going to start doing it soon.
5. Increased giving potential – Because you are investing in you, you have the resources to invest in and show compassion to others too.

The 5 different types of self-care

1. Sensory: Calming your mind. It is being in concert with the detailed sensations around you. This means you are living in the present and that allows you to let go of past resentments and anxieties for the future as well.
2. Emotional: Become fully engaged with your emotions. It helps so much with stress. It’s healthy to feel and accept your emotions, moving on from them; not bottling them up. It’s your emotional responses that really matter.
3. Spiritual: This might not be for you if you are not religious, but spiritual self-care is about being in touch also with your values and what matters to you. When you develop a sense of purpose, it is much easier to recover from stress and depression.
4. Physical: Physical activity is so important for self-care, because not only does it have obvious health benefits it reduces tension and anxiety too.
5. Social: All of us are social, even if we think of ourselves as being more introverted that some others we know. Being social helps you to understand that you aren’t alone; you are valued. Do things with folk who you love to be with and who improve your sense of well-being.
